Type Locality and Naming

Morondava Basin (Madagascar). Named for the Sakamena region in Madagascar. It constitutes the upper portion of the Sakamena Group lithostratigraphy within the Malagasy rift basins. Included as upper unit in Beaufort Gr in Morondava Basin (Madagascar)

Lithology and Thickness

The unit is part of a mixed clastic sequence succeeding the marine-influenced Middle Sakamena. Stratigraphic columns depict it as an intercalated succession of sandstones and mudrocks.

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the deltaic and shallow marine strata of the Middle Sakamena Gr

Upper contact

Unconformably to conformably overlain by the coarse fluvial conglomerates and sandstones of the Late Triassic Isalo Gr (specifically Isalo I or Isalo II, depending on the specific basin location).

Regional extent

Beaufort Gr equivalent. In correlation charts, it is grouped within the same depositional sequence as the Early Triassic strata of eastern Africa.
